The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has temporarily closed the Nairobi-Garissa Road due to flooding.

In a statement on Monday, April 8, 2024, KeNHA announced that flooding at the Mororo area between Madogo and Tana River bridge had rendered the road impassable.

"KeNHA informs the public of the closure of Nairobi - Garissa (A3) Road due to flooding at the Mororo area between Madogo and Tana River Bridge. The flooding is as a result of the ongoing rains which has occasioned rising water at Tana River," KeNHA stated.

According to the authority, due to the ongoing heavy rains, the Seven Folks Dams are rapidly filling to near full capacity, which could lead to an overspill.

"The increased water has prompted an advisory that the Seven Folks Dams are rapidly filling to near full capacity. The flooding at Mororo has compromised one lane of the road. This poses a high safety risk to the road users," the statement added.

KeNHA says the road shall remain closed until the flood waters subside and the damaged section is reinstated.

"This road, therefore, shall remain closed until the flood waters subside and the damaged section is reinstated. The Authority staff are on site ready to deal with the washout immediately after the waters subside. We urge road users to be cautious and avoid driving in the floodwaters," KeNHA added.

Heavy rains

According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rains are expected to continue in most parts of the country in the next seven days.

"Rainfall is expected to persist across the country, with particularly heavy rainfall anticipated in several regions including the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Rift Valley, South-eastern lowlands, Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya," the department stated.

The weatherman also pointed out high daytime temperatures exceeding 30°C in counties like Turkana, Marsabit, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Tana River and Kwale.

"High daytime temperatures, exceeding 30°C, are anticipated in regions such as Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale. Night-time temperatures are likely to remain high, above 25°C, particularly in parts of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western Kenya," the weatherman announced.

The weatherman has warned that the ongoing rains could lead to flooding in some parts of the country, urging Kenyans to exercise caution.
