Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Sunday said it had repulsed an Al-Shabaab attack on a Kenya-US military camp in Lamu County.

"This morning at around 5:30 am an attempt was made to breach security at Manda Air Strip. The attempted breach was successfully repulsed. Four terrorists bodies have so far been found. The airstrip is safe," said KDF in a statement shared on the social media accounts.

KDF said the huge plume of smoke seen in photos on social media arose from a fire that broke out during the unsuccessful attempt to breach the Manda Air Strip by the militants.

"The fire has been put under control and standard security procedures are now on-going," said KDF.

The Al-Shabaab militants were attempting to access the joint military base through the Manda Air Strip.

Al Shabaab, the al Qaeda-linked Islamist insurgent group fighting to overthrow the weak United Nations-backed Somalia government, also put out a statement promising further updates.
