Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza says has been arrested.

Mwangaza was allegedly arrested in Imenti Central while donating a cow to a family as part of her Okolea Outreach Program.

In a statement, Mwangaza however claimed that the police had refused to press charges against her, and were holding her in a police car.

"The police officers are still holding me inside their vehicle. They don't want to take me to police station and press their charges," she said.

"I'm under arrest. The police officers hawataki kunipeleka Station kufungua mastaka. Have been held in this police car for two hours now."

The CS is said to have been arrested for attending 'Okolea' meetings which had been banned by Interior Cabinet Kithure Kindiki.

Speaking from the police car, Mwangaza said the 'arrest' was politically motivated.

"The police officers came and told me to enter their car, which I did peacefully. They have refused to start the vehicle. I want to know who sent them and the mistakes which have happened here," she said.

"There are people who still do not believe there is a leader in Meru."

Mwangaza was 'arrested' alongside a woman to whom she had come to donate a cow.

Mwangaza issued a statement an hour later saying she was free, without much details.

"Finally. I'm free. I thank God I'm safe," she stated.

By the time of going to press the police had not issued a statement concerning the incident.
