3 injured as military ordnance explodes at scrap metal shop in Kariobangi

Three people were injured when unexploded military ordnance exploded at a scrap metal shop in Kariobangi light industries on Wednesday afternoon August 24, 2022.

Police said the explosion happened at a scrap metal yard owned by Robert Mwangi at around 3 pm when scrap metal workers came across the device with metallic parts.

“As they were in the process of cutting down the device to separate metallic from non-metallic parts, a mini explosive occurred causing slight injuries to the three employees who were present at the scene,” she said.

The victims have been identified as Morris Kamau, Simon Gichoi and Ali Kitheka.

Police also said the explosion also slightly damaged a motor vehicle, a white Toyota G-Touring registration number KBC 412D.

ATPU visit scene in Kariobangi

Detectives from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and other experts visited the scene and established that the device that exploded was an 84mm military ordinance.

“The explosion was a low order detonation because it occurred within the fusing system of the ordinance after explosives had already been removed from it,” detectives said.
