Residents of Kamwangi village in Gatundu North are up in arms with local leaders over the pathetic state of Wanugu road that links Gatei among other villages to the constituency headquarters.

The locals took issue with Chania Ward MCA Joseph Mwangi Kibuu for abandoning the critical road in his development plan despite having assured them that it would be developed before the onset of the heavy rains.

They decried that since the heavy rains started pouring in the area, movement challenges have doubled as they can no longer move their farm produce from the villages to Kamwangi and surrounding markets with ease.

They singled out that dairy farmers are now forced to transport milk by foot from the villages to Kamwangi town as vehicles assigned to collect the produce are unable to move to the villages due to the sorry state of the five-kilometre stretch.

At the same time, the locals led by Edward Mwangi regretted that the now muddy road has been causing frequent accidents as motorbikes especially struggle to manoeuvre.

"We voted for leaders to become our voice and to solve situations such as the poor state of this road. It is true we were promised that the stretch would be made to motorable standards but the situation is as you have seen, mud all over as a result of the ongoing rains," Mwangi decried.

The locals, while calling on the local leaders to promptly address the poor state of the road, insisted that the villages affected are key economic drivers in the constituency as they are the majority producers of milk, pineapples, passion fruits, tea and avocados.

“We do not want a situation where our produce will start rotting in the farms. In fact, the taxes we pay from our various transactions here are enough to warrant the tarmacking of this road and we believe with goodwill, this is doable,” they said.

They, at the same time, urged their MCA to stop disregarding them because they voted for another person stating that despite their political stand, elected leaders should serve all residents indiscriminately.
