Shock and grief have engulfed Kigunyo village in Gatanga, Murang'a County after three boys drowned in river Kiama on Sunday evening.

The three boys; two in Class Seven and one in Class Six at Mabae Primary School, are said to have gone for a haircut in Kirwara shopping centre before opting to branch at the river for a swim while on their way back home.

Ibrahim Ng'ang'a, a witness, said that the three boys had come from his place a few minutes before he was informed of the fatal incident.

"I was at the shopping centre when I heard people saying that there were bodies spotted floating on the river before rushing to the scene," Ng'ang'a said.

"The news came as a rude shock to me because when they left home, they seemed jovial and could not imagine things would turn out to be this tragic," he added.

Two bodies were retrieved from the river on Sunday while the other was retrieved on Monday by local divers.

Following the incident, Gatanga MP Nduati Ngugi visited the families of the boys at their homes where he promised to fence the section of the river where the incident occurred.

"We are going to fence that area because it has become a death trap for our children and we would not like to lose another life in such a manner," he said.

The three bodies have since been moved to General Kago mortuary in Thika awaiting postmortem.
