‘We have allocated Ksh300M to build houses for Mai Mahiu flood victims’ – Gachagua

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said the government has allocated Ksh300 million to build houses for the Mai Mahiu flood victims.

Speaking during the memorial service for the Mai Mahiu flood victims at the Mo Gas Grounds in Mai Mahiu, Nakuru on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the DP assured the victims that the Ministry of Housing will be allocating Ksh300 million for the construction of houses for survivors of the tragic incident.

Gachagua went on to state that the national government had already extended support by disbursing more than Ksh7 million for burial plans of the 61 individuals who lost their lives to the tragedy.

"We are now sitting down with the national government and the county government tujue vile tutasaidia this family to rebuild their life and start all over again. It is a difficult situation and as a government, we must support them, because it is the right thing to do.

He also applauded the county government of Nakuru among other departments for their immense effort to support the victims reiterating the government's unwavering commitment to assisting displaced residents.

"Sisi kama serikali kuu tumesaidia, governor walikuja na MP na rais, na tukatoa zaidi ya shilingi milioni saba ya kusaidia familia kuenda kupumzisha wapenzi wao. So every family around here got Ksh150,000, wale wa mbali kidogo Ksh200,000, kwanza that is to assist the people.

"Nataka kumshukuru gavana Kihika kwa kulipa all the hospital bills and mortuary charges so that this people do not have that burden na hio sasa ni ya kupumzisha."

On her part, Kihika stressed the urgency of continued support from the national and county governments, she also called on well-wishers to join the efforts and help them construct 85 houses for the victims

"We need 85 houses for the victims and we should come together and do it for our people, a single house may cost about Ksh1.8 million and we will appreciate it, already Safaricom PLC has pledged support," the governor said.
