2021 had its share of bizarre and odd occurrences in Trans Nzoia county.

Pastor chops off pupil's finger

In November, a pupil at Keese Primary School was rushed to hospital with minor injuries after a pastor attached to Reformed Church of East Africa (RCEA) chopped off her finger following a row over the school land.

The church which is the sponsor of the school is said to have been in dispute with the management of the institution over ownership of a playing field that had seen pupils barred from engaging in sporting activities.

“We were clearing grass on the field in readiness for games when the pastor approached me from behind and chopped my finger using a slasher,” Lucy Chebet who lost her finger in the incident said.

The school headteacher, Thomas Masika, said the dispute had greatly affected the learners who were facing it rough in participating in co-curricular activities as required.

“It is said that the man of God resorted to such acts of harming the girl while advancing the interests of the church with regard to laying claim to the land. We call for justice for the innocent girl,” Makokha said.

Man kills student over land dispute

Recently, on December 14, a family in Kapkoy area, Kwanza constituency, was sent into mourning after their son was allegedly killed by a neighbour.

The Form Two student at the Mwangaza Secondary School is said to have succumbed to head injuries inflicted on him by the said neighbour Ibrahim Namaswa following a land dispute.

Festo Wekesa told K24 Digital that the culprit hit his brother multiple times on the head, killing him on the spot before disappearing into thin air.

“My brother died a very painful death in the hands of the beastly man who after committing the act, ran into hiding,” Wekesa said.

Defiling and impregnating disabled minors

In another story, a report by the Ministry of Health in October revealed that approximately 126 disabled minors had been defiled and impregnated in Trans Nzoia County between January and September this year.

The report obtained by Humanity and Inclusion organization also revealed that only 18 cases were reported in health facilities and police stations.

It also indicated that Kiminini sub-county had the highest number of disabled minors who had been sexually violated.

Speaking to K24 Digital, Ruth June, the program’s officer at the international non-governmental organization, said the trend was worrying.

Ruth said that majority of the perpetrators are close relatives and people known by the victims of the sexual offences.
