Siaya man who filed a petition seeking to be recognised as the bona fide husband of a Canadian woman who was among passengers who died after the Ethiopian Airlines crash on March 10, 2019, has died by suicide.

Brian Aris Kobiero, 32, a Secondary School teacher at Nyang’oma Boys was on Thursday found hanging from a tree by his father at their compound in Sega, Siaya County.

The incident was confirmed by Ugenya North Senior Chief Joseph Ooko.

Prior to his passing, Kobiero wrote to the High court claiming that one of the passengers during the incident identified as Christine Tanner Dawn was his wife.

Court documents indicate that Kobiero claimed to have met with the lady in 2016 while she was still living in Canada before she moved to Kenya where they were cohabiting at his house in Narok.

He adds that he had introduced the said lady to his family during their customary marriage.

“I renovated and re-thatched my house ‘simba’ as required by the Luo traditions of a man ready to marry, she was welcomed and the marriage ceremony was conducted as the culture requires,” he said.

Kobiera further alleged that after 'his wife' Ms Tanner died in the crash, he honoured her in accordance with their cultural beliefs of mourning the dead.

However, Tanner's son did not acknowledge him and dismissed all the claims adding that his mother had not shared any information about her marriage and relationship with a Kenyan man.

The next court hearing had been set for September 20, 2022.
