Kisii County Governor Simba Arati has nominated Kisii Public Service Board Chairperson Julius Elijah Obebo as his nominee for the position of deputy governor.

Kisii Assembly Speaker Philip Nyanumba announced the development during a session on Wednesday, March 20.

"I nominate the following person as shown below for the position of deputy governor pending approval by the County Assembly; Elijah Obebo," Nyanumba disclosed.

Monda impeachment

This follows the Senate's confirmation of the decision to impeach Robert Monda as deputy governor of Kisii County on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

The impeachment was initiated by Kisii Members of the County Assembly.

Monda faced accusations of office abuse, gross misconduct, and violations of national laws. The Senate vote tallied 39 in favour of upholding the abuse of office charge, with three against and one abstention.

For gross misconduct, 35 senators voted affirmatively, with three opposed and one abstaining. Regarding the charge of committing crimes under national law, 34 senators found Monda guilty, while 10 sought to defend him, with one abstention.

The Senate's decision, led by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, also the Senate Majority Whip, meant that Simba Arati's deputy lost his battle against all charges brought against him in Parliament.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the decision, stating, "The result of the division indicates that the senators have upheld the following impeachment charges: a gross violation of the constitution and any other law, abuse of office, gross misconduct, and crimes under national law."

Under Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33(7) of the County Government's Act, and Senate Standing Order 86, the Senate resolved to remove Robert Monda from office through impeachment, thereby stripping him of his position as deputy governor of Kisii County.
