Unknown persons have demolished former Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed's home in Kakamega to pave the way for the construction of affordable houses.

The house, located in Kakamega's Milimani Estate, was demolished despite a court order stopping the government from demolishing the house.

The house, registered under Lucas Nandih Shamalla, has been at the centre of a heated dispute over ownership.

According to the caretaker of the house, the people who demolished the house came through the fence before starting the exercise to destroy the house.

“They entered through the fence and started vandalising the house before they left through the gate. They made sure they did proper damage,” Wahida Omar, the caretaker, said.

Following the demolition, locals were seen flocking the area scrambling for building materials.

On October 11, 2023, the Environment and Land Court in Kakamega issued an order stopping the government from demolishing or taking over the property pending a hearing and determination of the case.

“Pending the hearing and determination of this suit, this honourable court grants an order of temporary injunction restraining the respondents whether by themselves, their employees, proxies servants, agents or any other persons acting under their authority from disposing, selling, advertising for sale, auctioning, trespassing, occupying, entering upon, remaining thereon, constructing or carrying on with construction of any structure(s), buildings, fence, perimeter wall, or from howsoever interfering with the plaintiffs possession, occupation or proprietorship of all that parcel of land known as Kakamega Municipality /block III/241, in Kakamega County registered in the name of Lucas Nandih Shamala,” the court ordered.

"For avoidance of doubt, the orders herein are not to be used to evict any person.”

Other homes demolished in Kakamega

In November 2023, several houses in the posh estate were demolished, including the house of sugar baron Jaswant Singh Rai.

President William Ruto commissioned the affordable housing project for Kakamega in Milimani estate during his last visit to the area in September 2023.

The demolitions in November 2023 also saw retired land valuer Odongo Kabita lose his rental apartments within the Milimani Block 2 section.

A dozen civil suits have been lined up at the Kakamega High Court to contest the demolitions.
