Suspected Al-Shabaab militants on Friday night planted an improvised explosive device (IED) at the Konton police camp in Wajir County targeting officers at the camp, only for the IED to kill two hyenas.

Police at the camp said they heard a loud explosion at midnight Friday, January 29.

“At first, we thought the camp was under attack,” said a cop, who was at the protected area during the incident.

A patrol team from another station was, thereafter, deployed to keep vigil at the camp.

Police said the IED had been planted on a path leading to the camp.

Two hyenas, which attempted to remove soil from the IED planting site, were killed after the explosive device went off.

No suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, police said.

A car battery, copper wires, a water jerican and bomb-making materials were recovered from the scene, police said.
