Five family members died on Sunday night after their car was swept away by flash floods in Ng'atataek area in Kajiado Central.

The five were from Namanga headed to Ilbisil when their car was swept away at the flooded Ngatataek River bridge.

In the 9pm incident, a middle-aged woman, her three children and brother--in-law, who was the driver of the ill-fated van, were swept 70 metres downstream.

The family was travelling home from a wedding when the unfortunate incident occurred amid heavy rainfall.

Distressed family members were concerned when the family delayed reaching home and their phones were out of reach.

Family members, relatives, volunteers and security officers braved the heavy rains that pounded Kajiado the entire night and after several hours of search found that car along the bridge at 4am.

Following the incident, Kajiado County Commissioners Joshua Nkanatha on Monday urged Kajiado residents against crossing flooded rivers.

He also cautions drivers against underrating the level of water especially at night to avoid putting lives of residents at risk.

Mr Nkanatha also appealed to residents living in areas prone to mudslides to move to safe grounds to avert loss of lives.

The bodies have been moved to Kajiado Hospital mortuary.
