Three people have died at Kirigiti village in Kiambu County after a seven-storey building collapsed on Monday, September 26.

The building that was under construction is reported to have fallen on nearby houses occasioning the deaths of two children and a woman.

According to Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi who was among the first responders, the owner of the building had no approvals and thus the building was being put up illegally.

Wamatangi who confirmed the deaths of three people including a child said the incident happened days after he convened a meeting with developers to devise ways of averting the perennial incidents.

"It's very wrong and unfortunate that this incident happened. I actually removed one of the babies who was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The owner of the building had no approvals," Wamatangi said.

"I had just called a meeting with all developers but we were yet to finalize efforts to avert such incidents," he added.

Rescue mission for other people said to have been trapped inside the collapsed building is underway.

Kiambu County government fire extinguishers in collaboration with other government officers are leading the rescue efforts.
