Two people died and 20 others seriously injured on Sunday, December 24, 2023, after a vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident at Taru Town Center along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said the accident involved a bus operated by Mash Poa company and a Mercedes Benz trailer.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver of the trailer failed to maintain his lane, forcing the bus to veer off the road," NPS said.

20 passengers, among them two minors, who were seriously injured were rushed to Samburu Sub County Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased persons were taken to Kinango Sub-county Hospital Mortuary.

The accident occurred hours after four people were killed in a road crash in Turkana County.

The Saturday morning traffic incident occurred after an Isuzu Bus belonging to Tosha Bus Service, travelling from Nairobi to Kakuma while at Kalemng'orok Trading Center, lost control, veered off the road and rammed into pedestrians who were seated by the road, killing four of them on the spot.

"One woman who sustained serious injuries was rushed to Lokichar Sub-County Hospital for treatment and later referred to Lodwar County & Referral Hospital," police said.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to Lodwar County Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting autopsy.

In a separate incident, at least 47 passengers sustained serious injuries following an accident at the Fort Tenan Tunnel area along Londiani-Kisumu Road, Kericho County after a bus they were travelling in veered off the road and landed in a ditch on Friday.

The injured persons were rushed to the Fort Tenan Sub County Hospital for medical attention.

The police service urges members of the public to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations during the festive seasons to prevent such incidents.
