BBC journalist Waihiga Mwaura is ending the year with a bang after bagging a prestigious award to add to his career portfolio.

Mwaura was awarded the Anti-Corruption Excellence Award (safeguarding sports from corruption) from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Centre (ROLACC) - a non-profit organization based in Lusail, Qatar.

The BBC journalist was presented the award by Qatar leader Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev.

"Who is like our God? Grateful to have received this International Anti-Corruption Excellence Award from @Rolacc and @UNODC in the category of safeguarding sports from corruption, from the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani & the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. As a journalist, I spent the first eight years of my career looking at corruption in sports including doping, athlete nationality transfers and corruption at major sports events," Waihiga Mwaura wrote.

The BBC journalist additionally thanked his wife Joyce Omondi who accompanied him to Tashkent, Uzbekistan to receive the award.

Anniversary

Waihiga Mwaura's big win came just days after he celebrated his eighth anniversary with his wife.

The two lovebirds celebrated eight years since they walked down the aisle in December 2015.

In a short clip, Joyce was treated to a pleasant surprise where a violinist first serenaded her before performing for the couple with a love song playing in the background.

She attached a sweet caption: "Happy Anniversary my love."
