The Migori county administration has pledged to financially support families affected during an accident involving a lorry along the Migori-Isebania highway on Saturday morning.

Led by the county governor Ochilo Ayacko, the county government noted that they will cater for the medical expenses of those injured during the accident as well as funeral expenses for those who lost their lives.

"On our part, we will continue supporting those who are recovering by way of offering treatment and trying to meet some of the medical charges that they have; we’ll work out what it costs and see how to intervene. We’ll also meet the mortuary and modest funeral expenses for those we have lost," the county head stated.

While addressing the press on Saturday, April 8, 2023, the county boss underscored that victims of the tragedy will be offered psychosocial support through the Department of Health and Environment.

“We’re still in a state of shock. Through the Department of Health and the Department of Environment and disaster management, we will form a team that will help to talk to these families," Ayacko added.

Ayacko further assured the area residents that police will investigate and establish the cause of the accident that claimed eight lives.

Eight people were confirmed dead while eight others were seriously injured after the tragic accident.

The county's police commander Mark Wanjala who confirmed the incident noted that the accident occurred after the lorry ferrying rice lost control and veered off the road before it rammed into a boda boda stage.

Those injured were moved to a nearby health facility for medical treatment whereas the bodies of the deceased were taken to the morgue.

Investigations are still ongoing.
