The US embassy has cautioned US citizens to be vigilant and avoid large gatherings in Kenya on Wednesday, July 26, due to planned solidarity vigils and parades organized by the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition suspended anti-government protests and instead opted for peaceful solidarity parades and vigils to honour victims of police brutality.

Despite the organizers' intention for peaceful events, the US embassy has issued a warning as large public gatherings can potentially turn violent or lead to disruptions.

"Kenyan opposition leaders have called for solidarity parades and public vigils nationwide in lieu of a previously announced protest for July 26," the statement read in part.

"Organizers have stated that the events are intended to be peaceful.  However, large public gatherings can turn violent at any moment.  It is recommended to remain vigilant and aware of circumstances and avoid large gatherings.  Traffic disruptions are expected," the statement read further.

US citizens are advised to avoid protest areas and demonstrations, monitor local media for updates, avoid crowded places, maintain a low profile, and inform friends and family of their safety.

They have also been urged to stay alert in locations frequented by tourists or foreigners and ensure travel documents are up-to-date and easily accessible, including a valid US passport with a current Kenyan visa.

Additionally, having evacuation plans not reliant on US government assistance is suggested.

Azimio coalition called on its supporters to avail themselves for vigils and parades with candles lay flowers in honour of victims of police brutality.

“We will hold solidarity parades and vigils for victims of police brutality in various locations in all parts of the country.

We are calling Kenyans to come out and light candles and lay flowers in remembrance of and respect for the victims,” Azimio said in a statement.

They revealed that 50 deaths had occurred and hundreds were in hospital with serious injuries.
