Michael Warutere of Riara Springs Academy in Nairobi County is the top candidate in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination scoring a total of 428 marks out of the possible 500.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, November 23, Warutere noted that he scored 90 per cent in Math, 89 per cent in English, 89 in Kiswahili, 85 per cent in CRE and 75 per cent in Science.
"I feel ecstatic after this. I didn't expect this. I got 90 per cent in math, then English which I got 89 per cent, Kiswahili 89 per cent, CRE 85, and Science 76," he said.
Michael expressed his disbelief noting the common perception that only students from public institutions get such scores.
"I didn't expect to be the top student; it was all a shock to me. People expect students from public schools to get such marks," he remarked
The top-performing student expressed his desire to join Mang'u High School for his secondary education.
Warutere also told the media that he wishes to pursue a career in software engineering in the future
"I want to be a software engineer."
