Police in Nyali, Mombasa on Thursday afternoon (August 29) fatally shot a suspected robber at Bombolulu Sports area.

Nyali police boss, Simon Thirikwa, said the cops raided the suspect’s house and ordered him to surrender, but he, instead, hurled a suspected grenade at the law enforcement officers, who were, consequently, forced to open fire. The said-explosive thrown at the police officers did not go off.

The suspect, 45-year-old Mohamed Hamasa, alias Moha, was fatally shot in the incident.

The law enforcement officers found police uniform, boots, and materials which were allegedly used in making the said-improvised explosive device. Two smartphones (Samsung and Viwa) were also seized.

It is alleged that Hamasa was part of a gang that fatally shot an M-Pesa agent at Naivas store in Nyali on June 25 this year. The criminals, thereafter, made away with Ksh600, 000 from the agent’s shop.

Nyali police boss, Thirikwa, said the suspected explosives will be tested to ascertain their nature.

Thirikwa further said that Hamasa had, in the past, been charged with different criminal offences.

The suspect’s body was taken to Coast Provincial General Hospital morgue.

Hamasa had stayed in Bombolulu for nearly 20 years.
