Police in Laikipia are investigating an incident where a stranger walked into Laikipia University and stabbed a first year student to death.

In the incident, witnesses said that they heard screams coming from the hostels and when they rushed to the scene, they found the girl on the ground writhing in pain.

The suspect is also alleged to have tried to end his life by stabbing himself, but neighbours stopped him before handing him a thorough beating.

According to one witness named Amos Kinuthia, well-wishers tried to rush the student to hospital, but she succumbed to the injuries along the way.

“We found the girl who was unconscious, and we rushed her to hospital, but she died on the way,” Kinuthia said.

Another witness, James Kimaiga, who is a student at the institution, said they were unable to save the innocent girl due to how fast the events unfolded.

“Everything happened very fast, and we were not able to save her despite our efforts,” he said.

An irate mob pounced on the suspect, but was lucky to be saved by police officers, who saved him from the wrath.

The body of the deceased was moved to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital morgue.

According to the caretaker of the hostel, the man had been banned from accessing the rooms, but he did not respect the decision that was made by the management.

This is after a lady who is a friend to the deceased reported that the man had once tried to force himself on her.

The said incident forced the girlfriend to cut off communications with the suspect, a move police believe led to the murder.

It remains unclear how the man who resides in Nakuru managed to enter the University compound and gained access to the ladies hostel, where he committed the heinous act.

Police also questioned the deceased roommate other lady to record a statement on the murder and on when he tried to force himself on her so that action can be taken against the suspect.
