Police in Turkana have arrested a notorious highway robber and serial attacker.

According to the police report, Gedion Emojong Angelo has been behind a spate of criminal activities linked to banditry attacks.

"Earlier today (Friday) a team of multi-agency security personnel from ‘Operation Komesha Uhalifu North Rift' acting on a tip-off, nabbed a notorious highway robber accused of a spate of criminal activities linked to banditry attacks and highway robberies in Lorogon area, Turkana County," the report read in part.

Angelo is also suspected to be the mastermind behind the theft of camels earlier this month in Kalemorok within Logoron area in Turkana East Sub-County.

"As the National Police Service, we extend our gratitude to members of the public for the continuous cooperation and collaboration in our joint efforts of ending crimes, and nabbing criminals," the report added.

The suspect is being held at Kanuk Police Station.

Police launch operation

The arrest comes days after the government launched an operation to weed out bandits in the region.

The operation dubbed ‘Komesha Uhalifu in The North Rift’ was rolled out following last week’s killing of eight security officers and three civilians.

K24 Digital has established that additional troops with specialised equipment have been deployed to ensure that all firearms in the wrong hands are seized and peace restored in the banditry-prone region.

Rift Valley Regional Coordinator Maalim Mohamed yesterday warned bandits against thinking that they cannot be crushed.

“The government will not rest until we recover all illegal firearms in the wrong hands and apprehend bandits terrorising innocent civilians and ambushing security personnel,” Mohamed warned.

The National Police Service thanked members of the public for their continued cooperation and support that has contributed to the success of the exercise.

“We request that they continue sharing timely information to make the operation a success and restore sanity in the region,” NPS statement.
