The Archdiocese of Nyeri archbishop Antony Muheria has castigated Trade and Industries Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria over his recent remarks on GMO foods.

Speaking during a holy mass with over 200 priests and their parents at Our Lady of Consolata Cathedral in Nyeri, Muheria said Kuria's comments were uncalled.

He further noted that the remarks by the Trade CS were meant to mock Kenyans.

"We want to pay particular attention to how the CS has addressed Kenyans on this matter. We feel it was distasteful and disrespectful to the Kenyans to joke about life and death and even if it is an issue that could be taken as a joke it would be wrong to bring about statements whereby we trivialize death, suffering and insecurity, " the archbishop said.

Muheria called upon the Trade CS to apologize to Kenyans, saying it was bad for Kuria to joke about death and gamble with the lives of Kenyans.

"Kenyans deserve respect and not spite and in this matter, they do deserve an apology," Muheria said.

The Nyeri archbishop further noted that experts should discuss the long-term solution to curbing hunger instead of rushing for GMO foods as a solution to the food crisis.

"We call for a good moment by government, by the agricultural experts, by food experts so that we find the right path. We understand we may need a momentary relief to go towards embracing the feeding of our people with food that may be in fact GMO, but that is not the solution we need to address deep cited issues," he added.
