The Narok county government has paid Ksh600,000 to Tenwek Hospital to offset a medical bill for two boys who escaped death narrowly after an object, suspected to be a bomb, exploded while they were playing with it at Majibu Moto ward in Narok South Sub County.
Making the announcement, Narok county governor Patrick Ole Ntutu said his government has resolved to pay their entire medical bill in the hospital and offset their education needs.
"This morning, we met with Nankai Ole Kunkuru, the father of the two children who unfortunately tampered with a device that turned out to be a bomb that is suspected of having been left behind by the army training in that region in the 80s," said the governor.
According to the Narok county commissioner, Isaack Masinde, officers from the Kenya army and DCI are combing the area where the two boys were injured and have so far recovered 24 devices which are potential bombs, hidden underground and detonated them.
Masinde warned that some members of the public from the area had recovered such devices. Instead of reporting to the police or the provincial administration, they take the devices to scrap metal dealers and sell them.
"We are appealing to the members of the public to immediately report to the area chief and security officers should they come across a device that resembles the description of collected bombs," said Masinde, indicating that there are other undetonated ordinances in the area since it was a military training field in the 1980s.
He said the family will now write to the attorney general and raise a complaint about compensating them for the injuries incurred to Kick off.
Two blood brothers, Thomas Oloishuro, aged 12 years and Raphael Kunkuru, aged 6, were grazing their father's goats and, out of curiosity, accidentally detonated an abandoned bomb.
The bomb exploded and left them with serious injuries. They were rushed to Narok County Referral Hospital and later to Tenwek Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.
"The two boys mainly suffered eye and leg injuries but are recuperating well at the hospital, and one of them was due for discharge Today, but the other one is still undergoing treatment, and the bill might rise to Ksh800,000 or even up to Ksh900,000 and we will clear all of it as county government," said Ntutu.
He warned residents to stay away from any suspicious metallic or military ordinance sighted in the area and instead report such to the relevant authorities immediately.
"The scene has been secured, awaiting the arrival of bomb experts," he said while asking the residents to be calm as investigations continue.
Mzee Kunkuru thanked the national and county government for the interventions saying he was at the crossroads on where to get the money to pay the Hospital bills as he was struck by drought, killing several of his livestock.
