The drama unfolded at St.Mary's village in Kiharu, Murang'a County, after a woman was barred from attending her husband's burial on Friday, October 28, 2022.

Jane Kasunta, her two children, close relatives and friends were locked outside the homestead of George Karanja, who she claims is her husband.

In her defence, Kasunta said they have been living with the deceased for the past 17 years, making her his wife.

She said they lived together in the United Kingdom (UK), but Karanja got sick and succumbed to cancer.

Kasunta further stated that it was not her husband's wish to be brought back to the country for burial, but his family insisted on bringing his body back to his ancestral home.

"He had told me he would wish to be buried in the UK, but his family was of a different opinion which I did not object to," she said.

The mother of two also expressed that she was shocked after she was denied access to the home because there were no issues throughout the burial preparations.

"I don't know why I was barred from attending the funeral of my partner and father to my children. Maybe his family has reasons best known to them. I have friends who had paid air tickets to attend the burial but were also locked out," she lamented.

After a skirmish ensued for a while, Kasunta's son, aged 17, was allowed to attend the burial.

Karanja's brother operated the gate, controlling those who went in and outside the homestead.

"My other son is two years old and he could not go by himself, so he stayed back with me," she added.

Efforts to reach out to Karanja's family were futile as they refused to comment.
