Residents of Museno Village in Kakamega County took to the streets Thursday to protest the suspected murder of a middle-aged man, who, until his death, was detained at Shisasari Police Station.

The mourners paraded Duncan Butiya’s body through the Kakamega streets, demanding the transfer of police officers attached to Shisasari and Khayega posts, saying they were unnecessarily meting out brutality on local residents at slight provocations.

The deceased’s wife, Imelda Khabuku, said she was “reeling from shock” following “my husband’s unexpected death”.

Butiya, a boda boda rider, was arrested in unclear circumstances on Tuesday, June 25, and stayed in the police cells for two days.

He was found dead on Thursday, June 27.

Efforts to get a comment from the area police boss were fruitless.

Shinyalu MP Justus Kizito on Friday, June 29 demanded action to be taken against the police officers, who allegedly had a hand in Butiya’s death.
