Bill and Melinda Gates announce their divorce.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and his wife of 27 years Melinda Gates have announced an end to their marriage.

The two, on Monday evening, shared a similar message on Twitter announcing an end to their marriage even as they asked for privacy for their family.

"After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage," the pair tweeted.

The two first met in 1980 when Melinda joined the Microsoft firm.

They have expressed commitment to working together in running their empire, including Bill and Melinda Gates foundation, despite the divorce.

"We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundation, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in the next phase of our lives," read their statement on Twitter.

They got married in 1994 and Melinda was a product manager at Microsoft by the time they started dating. The pair were blessed with three children during their marriage.

"Over the last 27 years, we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead, healthy, productive lives," it read the joint statement.

"We ask for space and privacy for our family as we begin to navigate this new life.

According to Forbes, Bill is the fourth richest man in the world with an estimated wealth of $124bn (Kshs 13.3 trillion).

He made his money through the firm he co-founded in the 1970s, Microsoft, the world's biggest software company.
