The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza's son and brother over their alleged involvement in the death of Meru blogger Daniel Muthiani alias Sniper.

Documents seen by K24 Digital reveal that the two, Timothy Kinoti alias Timo (Mwangaza's son) and Murangiri Kenneth (Mwangaza's brother) were among the five suspects arrested on Thursday, January 4, 2024, and booked across various police stations within Nairobi and Kiambu.

The DCI officer in charge of the investigations affirmed that the duo which was arrested alongside Kenneth Mutua, Fredrick Muriuki, and Frankline Kimathi contacted the slain blogger, a staunch critic of Mwangaza, informing him that he would be meeting the governor to make amends and work together.

In response to the call, the slain blogger travelled from his home within Igembe South Sub-County to Meru town where he met the respondents and went missing afterwards.

Efforts by the deceased's wife to contact him bore no fruit forcing her to report to the police. The blogger's body was later found dumped at Mutonga River.

"Hyrene Kawira Kamenchu, the deceased's wife tried to contact him in vain prompting her to report the matter at Maua Police Station," the document read in parts.

The officer further noted that the DCI has yet to arrest other suspects involved in the murder of the blogger.

The investigative agency also requested the Kiambu Magistrates Court to allow detectives to detain the suspects for 21 days to pave room for investigations.

"The respondents (accused) have to undergo formal police procedures which include but are not limited to recording statements, interrogation, and subjecting them to mental assessment among other actions," DCI added.

Earlier, Mwangaza's Chief of Staff, Nchamba Mbithi, confirmed the arrest of the governor's bodyguard who is currently in custody.
