AJEA 2024: Mediamax journalists lined up for top aw*rds

Six Mediamax Network Limited journalists have been shortlisted as finalists for the 2024 Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) following their exemplary work in the media industry.

AJEA, a Media Council of Kenya (MCK) initiative honours fine journalists in different categories ranging from Agriculture and Food Security, Environment and Climate Change, Gender Reporting, Blue Economy to Business Reporting among others.

Mediamax, which is home to K24 TV, Kameme TV, People Daily Newspaper, Mediamax Digital, Milele FM, Kameme FM, Meru FM, Mayian FM, Msenangu FM, Emoo FM among others has seen six journalists line up for awards in the 12th edition of AJEA.

Reyhab Watiri of K24 TV has been shortlisted for an award in Agriculture and Food Security reporting for her story dubbed ‘Preservation of indigenous seeds’.

Vincent Voiyoh’s story 'Ingwe digitali’ on Milele FM has been shortlisted for best Digital Superhighway and Innovation Reporting award.

Kameme TV’s Environmental Journalist Bernard Gitau alias Gitau wa Wanjiku has also been shortlisted for best Digital Superhighway and Innovation Reporting award. The story that saw him line up for the award is dubbed; ’Ndogo ya kuhitana na unyihu wa Mai’ (Where wild animals quench thirst with distilled water).

Health Reporter Ben Kirira’s ‘Unveiling the hidden dangers: Cholera threat in Kenya' is gearing for best Health and Medical Reporting award after the story ran on K24TV.

Under Blue Economy and Business Reporting, Jasmine Atieno of People Daily Newspaper is lined up for honour after her story titled; ‘Coastal communities unite to save turtles from extinction’ was shortlisted.

In Sports category, Shadrack Odinga is among the finalists after highlighting the plight of former trailblazers in sports who are suffering after falling from grace to grass. The story titled; ‘Maisha ya upweke baada ya sifa’ was aired on K24 TV.

Odinga’s other story; ‘Karata za kandanda nchini Kenya’ which was aired on Milele FM is also shortlisted for an award in Sports category.

The awards are usually open to all journalists who submit their work to MCK for competition.

The stories submitted are subjected to a jury of at least seven judges who review the entries and award stories that demonstrate excellence, creativity, and journalistic merit in their presentation.

Winners will be announced on Friday, May 3, 2024, in a ceremony to be held at Edge Convention Centre, College of Insurance, South C.
