A serial lorry thief was, on Tuesday, December 15, sentenced to life imprisonment after Loitoktok court found him guilty of the crime.

The accused identified as Simon Muia Katuu is said to have been the mastermind behind a notorious group that abducts lorry drivers and beats them up before taking off with their vehicles.

In a statement by DCI, "Simon Katuu was found guilty of robbery with violence contrary to section 296 (2) of the penal code."

The presiding magistrate Judicaster Thuku, while making the ruling, said that the court was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offences.

Katuu is accused that on March 29, 2020, purporting to be a maize trader in need of a lorry for transport, hired a lorry driver in Embakasi, Nairobi.

The two would then move to ferry the said maize from Loitoktok to Marikiti market in Nairobi.

However, upon reaching Loitoktok, other men joined the accused and turned on the driver leaving him with serious injuries before taking off.

The driver later reported the matter at the Loitoktok police station but it was not until a year later on April 5, 2021, that the accused used the same trick on another driver which led to his arrest.

Katuu was nabbed at Emali in Makueni County by DCI detectives who had been trailing his criminal escapades.
