A businessman from Kirinyaga has been stabbed to death following a heated argument over an unpaid bill outside a bar at Kagumo Shopping centre.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, the incident happened at around 1pm on Saturday, July 3 where Mark Karimi was stabbed on the stomach by an unidentified man.

“He was stabbed on the stomach with a knife by one unknown person who was in the company of one namely Esther Murigi,” the report read in part.

Karimi was rushed to a private hospital in Kerugoya town where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“The victim was rushed to Mt Kenya Hospital by police officers from Mutitu Police Station who were on patrol,” the report further indicated.

But according to relatives, the businessman was in the company of three other people when they arrived at the said bar.

"The three people who were in his company escaped with minor stab wounds," Richard Muthii, brother to the businessman said.

The bill in question is estimated to be around Ksh2,000 and Muthii said that his brother had already cleared it.

"I want the police to get into the bottom of this matter and dig out the reason behind the murder of my brother since he had already cleared the bill," the brother of the deceased said.

Residents say that following the misunderstanding at the bar, the attendant made a phone call to an unknown person who later stormed into the bar wielding a knife.

"She locked the door and told them njojeeni mtaona. After a short while, there were footsteps heard from the roof. So they thought that the police had arrived and requested for the door to be opened," Eunice Wanja, a business lady in Kagumo said.

It's said that once the door flung open, the bar attendant turned on one man next to her and started hitting him hard on the head with a padlock.

The unknown suspect who joined her went on to stab another man.

"The man who was stabbed first did not suffer severe injuries since he was wearing motorcycle riding gear," Muthii said.

He added that the unknown person turned on the woman who was in the company of the businessman.

"When the suspect turned on the others, my brother moved in quick to stop him and that is when he was stabbed," the brother of the deceased said.
