Ministry of Agriculture Principal Secretary (PS) Prof. Hamadi Boga now says by end of June or July, Kenya will be locust-free.

Prof. Boga made the remarks on Saturday, May 2 while witnessing the spraying of locusts in the lowland areas of Samburu County.

The PS was accompanied to the exercise by officials of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Speaking in Maralal, Prof. Boga said the ministry has not relented in its quest to rid Kenya of the destructive hoppers.

It is estimated that more than 30,000 people in Samburu have been affected by locust invasion.

The PS’s remarks come a few days after FAO warned that the first generation of desert locusts in Kenya has matured and is ready to breed.

Desert locusts normally mature and start laying eggs from two to four months. This means that the first generation of locusts bred in the counties of Samburu, Isiolo, Wajir Mandera and Marsabit could begin mass breeding.

FAO, in an update dated April 28, said that the current situation in East Africa remains extremely alarming as more swarms form and mature in Ethiopia and northern and central Kenya.
