A pupil of Pesi Primary School in Aberdares Sub-County, Nyandarua County died on Tuesday, March 23 shortly after giving birth.

The child, whom we’ll identify by one name -- Nyambura -- died at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital, where she had been transferred after developing complications at the Pesi Dispensary in Shamata.

Nyambura had given birth to a baby boy at the health clinic shortly after 8:30am, the scheduled time for Science exam.

The girl, police said, went into labour when she was just about to start writing the test.

She was, consequently, taken to Pesi Dispensary, where she successfully gave birth at 10:10am.

“The mother and the baby, thereafter, developed complications,” a police report filed in Nyandarua North stated.

An ambulance was called and the mother and child rushed to the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital, where the teenage mother died shortly after admission. The baby’s condition remains critical.

An exam invigilator and a female police officer had been tasked with supervising the girl during her test-writing upon the improving of her condition. However, that was not to be as the teenager died before she could sit the exam.

Police said the new mother, who died at 1pm, succumbed to severe bleeding.
