Police in Kisumu, Kenya, have recovered an AK47 rifle days after a violent robbery involving a police officer in Tororo, Uganda.

In a statement on Wednesday, January 31, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the gun was recovered by Kasagam police officers on the beat in Nyalenda A Ward.

The firearm was recovered from an abandoned vehicle that the thugs were using after violently robbing the officer identified as SPC James Onyapidi.

The cop was waylaid by the thugs while on the way to his guard station at Agururu A zone in Tororo District.

"The rifle serial number UG POL 861314 09446 was recovered by Kasagam police officers who were on patrol duties at Nyalenda A ward, after they intercepted a suspicious Toyota Axio reg.no. KDL 301P whose 5 occupants immediately flang the doors open and scampered for safety, abandoning the vehicle," DCI said.

A homemade gun and four mobile phones were also recovered from the vehicle.

The DCI revealed that the gun was undergoing ballistic examination as the search for the thugs who are still at large continues.

At the same time, the Kenyan authorities confirmed that the missing suspects' accomplices had been arrested in Uganda and charged in court.

"So far, the District Police Commander in Tororo Mr Adam Kimuli has confirmed the violent robbery involving his officer, further noting that some accomplices had already been arrested in Uganda and charged before the Tororo District Court," DCI added.

"Meanwhile, painstaking forensic analyses are being explored with the aim of obtaining crucial leads to the run-away suspects, and the vehicle detained for further processing."
