Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua visited families affected by floods in Kisauni, Mombasa County on Tuesday, November 21 amid ongoing heavy rains that are wreaking havoc in various parts of the country.

In a statement, the second in command noted that that relief food and non-food items were distributed to alleviate their hardships.

"At Barawa, Kisauni Constituency in Mombasa County today, I had an opportunity to visit families affected by the enhanced rains to share in their pain and reassure them of our commitment to supporting them in rebuilding their lives. The food and non-food items we flagged off will help them meet their urgent needs for sustenance," Gachagua stated.

He underlined the severity of the situation and the impact of the ongoing El-Nino rains across more than half of the counties.

Gachagua also said the government was committed to collaborating with county officials and partners to address the issue.

"The ongoing El-Nino rain has negatively affected our people across more than half our counties. We are working with Counties and partners to reduce human suffering even as we engage in lasting solutions," he noted.

"County Governments need to expedite mitigation measures to prevent tragedy as the rains are expected to stretch into the First Quarter of 2024," Gachagua asserted.

Relief food

This comes a week after the second Head of State announced that the government was sending relief food to all families affected by the inclement weather.

Speaking on Friday, November 10 at Harambee House Annex, Gachagua noted that the government in collaboration with various ministries had devised ways to save Kenyans from the havoc and reinforce ongoing response activities.

"Through a multi-agency approach, we have instituted various ways to save the lives of Kenyans and property in the context of the heavy rains being experienced in the country. On Friday at Harambee House Annex, I chaired a meeting bringing together respective Ministries, State Agencies and Departments, local and international partners, to assess the current situation and tighten ongoing response activities," Gachagua stated.
