The family of a young woman, who died early this month after allegedly being sexually assaulted by her employer in Embakasi, Nairobi, is appealing for financial support to lay their kin to rest.

Cynthia Nanjala, 20, died on June 2, 2022, while receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Househelp admitted to KNH

She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition after allegedly being raped by her former employer just six days after she started working as a house help.

Nanjala was found naked while bleeding from her pelvic. Medical examination confirmed that she suffered a spine injury. She also had some strangulation marks on her neck.

According to her sister, Yvonne Mmbone Muruli, the deceased was unable to speak for two weeks but before her death, she revealed that her former employer was responsible for her injuries.

In a recent interview, Muruli said well-wishers had helped the family to clear a Ksh112,000 hospital bill accumulated at KNH but the mortuary fee remains unpaid.

The family is now seeking financial aid to clear the bill and meet other burial expenses totalling Ksh95,000.

Usikimye, a non-profit making organisation working toward ending Sexual Gender-Based violence, has urged Kenyans to help the family accord their kin a decent send-off.

The family says the deceased will be laid to rest at their Shinyalu home in Kakamega County.

“We are calling on well-wishers to help the family transport the body to Ileo village in Shinyalu for burial. We hope that she will be laid to rest on June 25, 2022, according to the initial plan” the organisation said.

K24 Digital has established that two suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the incident and are still in police custody.
