This has in turn enabled citizens to interact with the investigative agency and even encouraged some citizens to disclose the whereabouts of wanted individuals thus contributing to the success of the agency, if this craft is something to go about.

With the year winding up, K24 Digital summed up the agency's most compelling stories of 2023.

Suspects linked to $439 trillion fraud

The story published on the DCI's official social media platforms on November 15, 2023, was among the most compelling stories owing to the figures quoted.

According to the Mohammed Amin-led agency, eight of the suspects were apprehended during an operation at a warehouse in Nairobi after they defrauded the foreigners the amount in question through an elaborate scheme.

In the scheme, the suspects while posing as customs officers tricked the foreign businessmen into believing that their consignment of 40 pallets containing USD4 billion was being held at the Kenya Customs Warehouse.

To release the consignment, the suspects demanded the businessmen to send USD36,000 duty fee.

With the DCI's help, the businessmen pretended that they had agreed to the suspects' demands and headed to the warehouse to pay the fee.

As soon as they arrived at the venue, the officers stormed the premises and arrested the suspects.

Startled netizens failed to comprehend and compute the figures quoted by DCI sparking debate online over the accuracy of the report.
