Two families in Loitoktok Kajiado South have been thrown into mourning after their children died in a swimming escapade that turned tragic during the new year celebrations.

The two girls aged 9 and 10 years were among tens of other children swimming at a hotel swimming pool before they drowned.

The two were rushed to a nearby dispensary but pronounced dead on arrival.

Confirming the incident, Loitoktok Sub County police commander Shadrack Ruto said investigations into the incident have commenced and the hotel management expected to write statements today.

"It is such a tragic way to start the year. Losing two young souls who were out to enjoy the moment is a big blow to their family. It is unfortunate that efforts to save the two did not bear fruits as they all succumbed," Ruto said.

The police commander urged management to always ensure they are in charge of children and not take chances.

" It is only right if children are fully managed during any adventure. The management should at all times be in control of children's whereabouts, especially on matters like swimming. Children cannot take care of others and assuming they are just having fun at times can turn tragic," he added.

Ruto also cautions parents to be vigilant of their kids and not leave them unattended.

"Every parent has a duty to give attention to their kid even during a vacation. We have commenced investigations into the incident," he said.

The bodies were moved to Loitoktok Subcounty hospital awaiting postmortem as investigations commenced.
