Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has justified her relationship with Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki alias Samidoh noting that the Kenyan law allows polygamy.

The senator while speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Monday, October 9, 2023, noted that her relationship with the musician was acceptable since the law recognises their relationship dynamic.

She went on to insist that she had not broken the law by being in the 'situation'.

"Sheria ya Kenya ya polygamy ambayo imepitishwa kwa bunge yetu inaruhusu polygamy, sijavunja sheria yoyote kukua katika situation mimi niko," she stated.

This loosely translates to:

"The Kenyan law on polygamy that was passed in our parliament allows polygamy, I have not broken any law in my situation."

Nyamu also offered nuggets of wisdom to Kenyan youth encouraging them to live life on their own terms.

The mother of three while asserting that she was living a life free from restrictions implored the youths to emulate her by living their truth and however they want to live regardless of who supports their decisions or not.

"Naishi ukweli wangu silazima nipretend, niko huru, sifichi chochote na sina mambo ya nyuma nyuma, ile kitu unaona ndio unapata. Vijana wawe hivo wawe huru waishi maisha yao na wasiogope mtu yeyote ata kazi, biashara, maono, ndoto ama kitu yoyote wanataka usiangalie mwenzako, go for your dreams," she added.

This loosely translates to:

"I am living my truth, I don't have to pretend, I am free and I am not hiding anything, what you see is what you get. Youths should emulate my way of life by living as free as they wish without fear. I also encourage them to chase after what they desire whether a job, business, go for your dreams,"

The bill allowing men to marry multiple wives was passed by the parliament on March 20, 2014.

Before the amendment, the proposed bill gave the first wife the right to approve her husband's second wife.
