Saumu Mbuvi, the daughter of former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, has revealed that she has put on weight because of her Bipolar medication.

The mother of two went public about her mental condition years ago.

Bipolar disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. [sic]

Bipolar is associated with episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive lows to manic highs. The exact cause of Bipolar disorder isn’t known, but a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain structure and chemistry play a role. [sic]

Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications and psychotherapy. [sic]

In a recent post on InstaStories, Saumu lamented Bipolar medication was making her gain weight noting that she was starting to feel uncomfortable.

Saumu additionally said she would be hitting the gym.

"So one of the side effects of bipolar medication is weight gain, and it gets very uncomfortable getting so much unexpected weight. Some days it makes me feel so bad at times. Gym loading…" Saumu Mbuvi wrote.

Struggle with Bipolar

Saumu Mbuvi opened up about her Bipolar condition in March 2021 while speaking during an interview with Massawe Japanni on Radio Jambo.

In an interview, Saumu explained that her condition got worse when she started dating her baby daddy former Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip, revealing that she was always in and out of hospital after a week or two.

I have been battling Bipolar for the last eight years. With Bipolar you have to deal with emotions mara uko na raha sana na saa zingine uko na huzuni sana.

But all those years, I have never been serious to the extent of staying in the hospital but when I started dating Anwar. It was tough because I was going through physical and emotional torture. It reached a point I had to speak out and be a voice for many women.

I was not chased, I walked out. I was going through emotional and physical abuse. He used to celebrate saying I’m bipolar and I had the condition for over eight years. We were together for one year and half,” Saumu Mbuvi.

Saumu further lamented that her baby daddy Anwar used and dumped her.

Sijui alikuwa na intention gani na mimi maana yeye alinitongoza kama rafiki, alikuwa anasema 'babako ni rafiki yangu'. Sikujua intentions zake ni kunitumia na kuniacha. When I was with him, I was always getting sick, nilienda hospitali kama mara kumi, after a week or two am in hospital because of physical or emotional torture," she said.

Saumu Mbuvi publicly celebrated last year after her baby daddy Anwar was floored in the Lamu senatorial election.
