Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru made her acceptance speech moments after she was declared the new chairperson of the Council of Governors.

In her speech, Waiguru expressed that she was honoured and privileged by the opportunity.

"I am profoundly humbled, honoured and privileged to be entrusted with this role at a critical time when we have just ushered in the third generation of county governments," she stated.

"The responsibility bestowed me is no mean feat, but I am equal to the task"

The governor was elected during an election held at the induction of the county heads in Mombasa County.

The Kenya Kwanza coalition fronted the second-term governor against Azimio's Joseph Ole Lenku.

The Kajiado County chief had expressed interest in the coveted position alongside Wajir's Abdullahi Ahmed.

The second-term County chief was elected through a consensus.

Waiguru now becomes the first female governor to rise to the position since the advent of devolution.
