More drama at UoN as Kiama sends Mbeche on leave

The leadership crisis at the University of Nairobi on Tuesday escalated further after Prof Stephen Kiama allowed Prof Isaac Mbeche to proceed on leave.

Prof Kiama, whose appointment as the vice-chancellor was revoked by Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof George Magoha, moved to stamp his authority by making some changes into the top management of Kenya's leading university.

The veterinarian surgeon insisted that there is no leadership crisis at the university.

In his changes, Prof Kiama named UoN Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Extension) Prof Madara Ogot as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, whom he said was nominated to this position as Prof Isaac Mbeche proceeds on leave.

“Following the request by Prof Isaac Mbeche, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance, Planning and Development) to proceed on annual leave with effect from January 6and the same having been granted Prog Ogot, was appointed to act in this position for the period Prof Mbeche will be on leave,” said Prof Kiama in a letter dated January 21.

Kiama further appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Affairs Prof Julius Alexander Ogeng’o in an acting capacity as the Deputy Vice Chancellor Student Affairs to allow for substantive filling of this position.

“Both Prof Ogot and Prof Ogeng’o were formally appointed. Meanwhile, I wish to take this opportunity to thank all staff and students for remain calm and proceed with normal university business,” added Kiama.
