A section of students at St Peters Boys High School in Mumias, Kakamega county are counting losses after a fire razed their dormitory on the evening of Sunday, April 9, 2023.

In the incident, the dormitory accommodating 90 students was destroyed by the fire whose cause is yet to be established.

At the time of the incident, the learners had converged at the dining hall for their supper and therefore no casualties were reported.

The school principal, Crisphinus Owino noted that the bedding and personal effects of the students who slept at the dormitory were burnt down.

He stated that the school administration had set plans to accommodate the students affected as they mitigate the issue at hand.

The principal further assured parents and learners that the unfortunate incident will not affect learning activities in the region.

“We have some extra mattresses and double-decker beds to take care of 80 students. We are still making arrangements for the remaining 10 learners,” Owino stated.

Owino further asserted that investigations into the incident were ongoing.

“We don’t know whether it’s an electrical fault and it was deliberately started by one of the students. We are still investigating to establish the cause of the fire,” the principal added.
