Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Sabina Chege has called on girls and women to work hard and look for their own money to avoid being victims of femicide.
Speaking on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Sabina noted that young girls and women should be encouraged to lay their foundation without expecting a man to save them.
She particularly pointed out that young women should be mentored to accept that they can't start from the top, this she says is a start to reducing femicide in Kenya.
While appealing to women to hustle for their own money, Sabina expressed that more counselling centres and forums should be launched to educate women to reduce the prevalence of femicide witnessed recently.
"Counselling, mentorship and girls accepting that you can't start from the top is a start to reducing femicide cases. What comes easy goes easy. Girls need to know how to work hard. There is no free money in this world. There is nothing that comes for free, the only thing that is free is air and it is given by God," she stated.
"Wake up work hard, if you are in school complete your school look for a job, don't expect that men will be giving you money, it will not happen," she added.
Femicide in Kenya
Sabina's remarks come amid the spate of killings of women and girls.
On Saturday, a section of human rights activists, women representatives, men and women held marches across different parts of the country to protest after the recent macabre killings of more than 16 women within a month.
Today, the Ministry of Interior held a consultative meeting to discuss effective measures and strategies to safeguard women and girls against potential predators.
"Addressing the serious issue of femicide, where financial aspects often intertwine, we note most cases involve intimate partners or known individuals to the victims.
"PS Dr. @ray_omollo held a consultative meeting with @PSAnneWangombe (Gender & Affirmative Action) & PS Dr.@Bettymuganda17 (Higher Education & Research) to deliberate on effective and lawful strategies to safeguard our women and girls against potential predators," the ministry announced.
