The government has completed the deregistration processes of churches linked to Pastor Ezekiel Odero and Paul Mackenzie and four others.

The churches had earlier been suspended and their deregistration was confirmed on Friday through a gazette notice issued by the Registrar of Societies, Maria Nyariki.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 12(1) of the Societies Act, the Registrar of Societies cancels the registration of the societies specified with effect from the respective dates," the notice reads.

The churches that have been deregistered are New Prayer Centre Church owned by Pastor Ezekiel and Mackenzie's Good News International Ministries.

Others are Helicopter of Christ Church, Theophilus Church, Kings Outreach Church, and Royal Park Home Owners Estate Association Langata.

Mackenzie is linked to the death of more than 400 people in Shakahola forest, Kilifi County, whom he is said to have misled to fast to death with a promise of meeting Jesus.

On the other hand, Pastor Ezekiel, as well as Mackenzie, found himself at loggerheads with state authorities after the government launched a crackdown on rogue preachers said to have indoctrinated their followers.

Earlier, the state had asked Good News International Church - run by Pastor Ezekiel, but Mackenzie is listed as the chairperson - to give reasons why its registration should not be cancelled.

It had been reported that Mackenzie's church had sought permission to change its officials, a move that was eventually rejected.

There are 40,000 faith organizations and about 100,000 registered societies under the Societies Act.
