A section of Nyeri women on Thursday, January 18, 2024, held peaceful demonstrations in Nyeri town over recent macabre killings of young women across the country.
Carrying twigs and placards, the women urged the government to put measures in place and ensure that security is enhanced in lodgings and short-accommodation rooms by the owners to prevent femicide cases that have been witnessed in the past.
Led by Gatitu/Muruguru ward member of the county assembly(MCA) Wangechi Njithi, the lawmaker noted that women should be sensitized on the dangers of using social media channels to look for love.

"We are saddened by the increased killings of our young girls in the lodgings and the Airbnbs. We are urging the government to ensure those who offer accommodation services have enhanced security to prevent the unfortunate killings," she said.
Adding;
"Our girls should know that it is not safe to look for their partners on social sites. They should exercise caution when meeting with strangers because we are tired of educating our girls only to be taken home in caskets. It is very painful for the parents."
On her part, Ann Wairimu conserved that a section of young ladies no longer want to labour to earn a living but they want to live large and therefore end up meeting people they barely know only to get harmed.
"Our young ladies should learn to work to get their own money as we have done. It is unfortunate that our girls no longer want to work but they want easy money from even strangers who end up harming them. We also want to urge the university and college students to be content with what they receive from their parents and live within their means as it is not safe out there," Wairimu said.
The women further called upon the government and various women's organizations to facilitate talks with young university and college students to caution them of the dangers they are exposed to on social media.
