800 bags of contaminated cereals from Mukumu Girls' in Kakamega County are set to be destroyed on Friday, April 5, 2023, as ordered by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
This will cost the county at least Ksh878,000 to transport the consignment to the Bamburi Cement plant in Mombasa County.
The consignment of maize, beans, and rice was flagged off from the school by the county boss Fernandez Barasa, who was accompanied by other politicians and regional commissioner Samson Irungu.
Barasa says the exercise will be witnessed by security officers, a few parents, teachers from the institution as well as National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) officials for accountability.
“For accountability purposes, the commissioner here and I want to assure the public that the maize and the beans that were contaminated are now going to be destroyed professionally, and in compliance with NEMA procedures,” Barasa said.
The school is set to reopen next week even as the report on the nature of contamination in the killer foodstuff that left three students dead remains unclear.
