Keiyo South Member of Parliament Gideon Kimaiyo has come to the rescue of a student whose mother had been forced to take two goats to school due to lack of school fees.

A cash-strapped woman opted to leverage her two goats to settle fees for her child joining Form One in Marakwet East.

The girl who fared well in the 2023 KCPE examination was offered a place at Queen of Peace Secondary School, Chesongoch.

In an image widely shared on social media, the girl and her mother are captured along with two goats that they were to use to secure admission at Queen of Peace Secondary School in Marakwet East.

In response to the dire situation and to ensure that the girl gets an education, Kimaiyo announced that he would sponsor the girl for the years in high school.

“Though the girl doesn't come from my constituency, I was touched by this story. I walked to the principal and paid school fees. I will sponsor the girl for 4 years. Mama arudishiwe kondoo zake na tuombee Mungu izae iwe mingi,” the MP said.

This comes after the Ministry of Education revealed that there are more than 130,000 boys and girls from across Kenya who are yet to transition from primary to secondary school.

This is despite the government insisting that all candidates who sat the last Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams should transit to Secondary under its policy of the 100 per cent transition.

As of January 26, the Ministry of Education reported that while children have reported to either secondary school or joined tertiary institutions, 131,854 children have not reported to school.

The ministry placed 1.39 million Children in secondary schools with 90 per cent of the students reported to schools while about 10 per cent have not.

Kakamega, Lamu, Marsabit, Mombasa and Turkana counties had the highest transition rate at 99 per cent.
