Police from the National Police Service (NPS) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended 20 boda boda riders who stoned a woman's vehicle and assaulted her male passenger after she hit passengers and fled the scene in Kitengela on Friday, January 18.

According to a statement by NPS on Saturday, January 20, NPS officers from Kitengela Police Station and DCI collaborated in the arrest of the 20 suspects and the detention of 26 motorcycles.

Police said the incident, initially reported on January 18, 2023, involved a Nissan Juke, driven by Conex Kemuto Onengo.

"NPS Officers (Kitengela Police Station and DCI) arrested 20 suspects and detained 26 motorbikes on 19th January 2024 in response to an incident that occurred within Kitengela Township on 18/1/2024 when Boda Boda riders extensively damaged a vehicle and assaulted a male passenger. The incident initially reported on 18/1/23 at Kitengela Police Station happened at 1930 hrs along Kitengela- Athi River Road when a motor vehicle Nissan Juke driven by Conex Kemuto," NPS stated.

According to the authorities, investigations suggest that Onengo's vehicle collided with an unknown motorcycle carrying a pillion passenger along Kitengela-Athi River Road at 7.30 p.m.

Instead of stopping, the driver sped off towards Namanga, hitting a male pedestrian and his 4-year-old son.

Continuing on Old Namanga Road, she struck another motorcycle, injuring its expectant pillion passenger.

The spree of hit-and-run incidents concluded with the vehicle being blocked and stoned by irate boda boda riders near the Shell Petrol Station at Enkare.

During the altercation, a male co-driver in the Nissan Juke was also assaulted and sustained serious injuries, while the female driver managed to escape unharmed.

Police said Conex Kemuto Onengo was arraigned in the Kajiadob Law Court on Friday, January 19, where she pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

The court imposed a fine of Ksh100,000 on her, with a default sentence of one-year imprisonment. The vehicle is currently awaiting inspection for possible additional charges.

"She was arraigned in Kajiadob Law Court on January 19, 2023, where she pleaded guilty to driving under alcohol and was fined Kshs. 100,000," the statement read in part.

The NPS, in its statement, urged members of the public to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

They advised the public to arrest suspects and hand them over to the police for proper legal procedures as per the law.
