Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has asked both primary and secondary school head teachers to ensure teaching starts at 8.00 am and ends at 3.45 pm on weekdays.

Machogu said the Ministry provides for a maximum of six hours of teaching, noting that the education of learners should be natural and not forced.

The CS cited Finland saying it has a three-hour teaching regime yet it is reputed to have a world-class system of education.

"Primary and secondary should adhere to the school hours which allows learners to manage their learning and engage in physical education activities," the CS said.

He made the remarks on Friday when Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) officials, led by its Chairman, Indimuli Kahi paid him a courtesy at his Office at Jogoo House.

Also present was the Education Principal Secretary, Dr Belio Kipsang.

Machogu lauds headteachers

Machogu lauded KESSHA for the support it has been giving the government in the management of education and in particular, the education reform the government is undertaking.

Kipsang challenged KESSHA leadership to regulate the cost of school uniforms among its members.

On his part, Kahi raised various issues he wants the Ministry to address to make it easier for principals to manage secondary schools.

He said capitation for free day secondary education programmes, school uniforms, disbursement of curriculum materials, management of co-curricular activities and auditing of school finances as some of the issues the association wants the Ministry to address.

The CS said the Ministry will set up a team to study the issues and provide solutions to them.

He, however, asked the association to submit proposals on possible ways of addressing the issues.
